Effect of penicillin on metamorphosis of the tadpole of Bufo regularis Reuss

The authors studied the effect of penicillin in a dose of 100 I.U./ml on the metamorphosis of two larval stages (51 and 57) of Bufo regularis. In the first, premetamorphotic, stage (51), the metamorphosis of the penicillin-treated larvae was completed six days later than in the control group. In the second, metamorphotic stage (57), the metamorphosis of the penicillin-treated larvae was completed two days later than in the controls. The development of the forelimbs and the general form of the toadlet's head were also affected in the treated animals, but in varying degrees.
