Male toads (Bufo regularis) were fed thyroxine (0.01 mg/50 g body weight) once a week for four weeks. In treated toads there was a significant increase in the height of the seminiferous tubule epithelium compared with the controls, but no increase in tubule diameter during the experimental period. The histological evidence showed modification of spermatogenesis. In addition, testicular androgenic activity increased, as indicated by the presence of well developed interstitial tissue. It is speculated that thyroxine stimulated LH and/or FSH release, which in turn stimulated androgen secretion, with consequent modification of spermatogenesis.
