The pharmacokinetics of quinine and quinidine in malaria

The differences between the pharmacokinetic properties of the Cinchona alkaloids in healthy subjects and patients with acute malaria is discussed. Quinidine is more potent as an antimalarial, and probably more toxic than quinine. For a given dose plasma concentrations are lower, because the volume of distribution and systemic clearance are 20-50% greater for quinidine. Further research is needed to assess the optimum therapeutic concentrations of these alkaloids.
