Effects of in vivo cadmium administration to rats on certain functional parameters of isolated erythrocytes

Oral administration of CdCl2 (40 mg/kg body wt/day for 3 days) to male albino rats brought about declination in both methemoglobin reductase and hemoglobin level in erythrocyte. Antioxidant defence mechanism of erythrocytes was markedly affected by Cd. Superoxide dismutase activity was elevated with depression in catalase activity. There was no alteration in glutathione peroxidase level. Reduced glutathione status was depleted and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was increased. At the same time increased peroxidation of erythrocyte membrane lipid was observed. The osmotic stability of erythrocytes and the activity of certain membrane enzymes, viz. acetylcholine esterase, NADH dehydrogenase, Mg2+-ATPase and p-nitrophenyl phosphatase were affected by Cd administration. Other components of the membrane, viz. cholesterol, phospholipids and sialic acid residues were found to be altered but membrane sulfhydryl groups remained unchanged.
