Effect of oral cadmium administration to female rats before and during pregnancy on the histoenzymatic activity in maternal and foetal kidneys

Female rats received 50 ppm Cd as CdCl2 in drinking water for 5 mo. before mating. Cd treatment was then continued for 20 days of gestation. The fetuses were then removed from the uteri of the dams. Histoenzymatic studies of the maternal rat kidney revealed a decrease in succinic dehydrogenase, reduced NADP-dehydrogenase and Mg activated ATPase, as well as an increase in acid phosphatase activity. In the kidneys of the exposed fetuses no changes in activity of the studied enzymes were found, though such kidneys contained a reduced number of developed nephrons.
