Studies on some aspects of glucose metabolism in guinea pigs infected with Coxiella burnetii

Certain parameters of glucose and glycogen metabolism were investigated in guinea-pigs experimentally infected with the phase II Nine Mile strains of C. burnetii. The infected guinea pigs exhibited hyperglycaemia and progressive depletion of hepatic glycogen accompanied by increase in glycogen phosphorylase and decrease in glycogen synthetase during the acute stage of infection. Glucose tolerance test (GTT) performed at the peak of infection revealed a lowered tolerance. Parenteral administration of insulin, prior to the performance of GTT, had only a mild effect on lowering the blood glucose.
