The number of outbreaks of duck virus enteritis confirmed by the Central Veterinary Laboratory, Weybridge, rose from 19 during 1977-83 to 58 during 1984 to mid-1987; 21 of these were between April and June of 1987. Only one outbreak was in commercial ducks and geese, causing serious losses; the others were captive waterfowl, including Muscovy ducks. The arrival of free-flying waterfowl, usually mallard drakes, 1-2 weeks before losses occurred, was commonly observed in many outbreaks. No pathognomonic lesions of duck virus enteritis were seen PM in many of the outbreaks. It is suggested that free-range commercial ducks and geese that may come into contact with wild waterfowl between April and June are at considerable risk.
