Studies on serum enzymes in bilharziasis before and after treatment with niridazole

Studies of 34 Egyptians with Schistosoma haematobium infection and 14 with S. mansoni, showed that serum aldolase, total and L-tartrate-labile acid phosphatase levels were unchanged. Serum lactic acid dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase levels were raised, particularly in S. mansoni infection. After treatment with niridazole, serum enzymes returned to normal indicating that the drug is effective and not deleterious to host tissue.
