Electric resistance of the vaginal mucus as an aid for heat detection in sheep

In Saudi Arabia, silent oestrus is common in the Najdi breed of fat-tailed sheep, a non-seasonal breeder. An instrument designed for use in cows was tested in 318 ewes. Mean electric resistance was 21 +or- 1.2 ohms in 76 oestrous ewes, 31 +or- 4.8 in 318 ewes not in oestrus, and > 27 in 24 pregnant ewes. It is concluded that electric resistance value could be a potential aid in oestrous detection.
