Sheep were treated for 'out of season' lambing with intravaginal sponges, each containing 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate. The sponges were withdrawn after two weeks when each sheep received PMS (500 IU). In the group in which the sponges were also dusted with Sigmamycin (a combination of oleandomycin 8.33 g and tetracycline 8.33 g) the bacterial incidence was reduced. In another group in which the sponges were coated with Veramix antiseptic cream (0.5% cetrimide) no reduction in bacteria was observed. At oestrus, two days later, the bacteriology of vaginal mucus was similar in these two groups as also in those in which the sponges were not treated with any antibacterial agent. Sigmamycin did not improve lambing results. Tables list the bacterial flora of the vagina in the different groups.
