Vaginal prolapse in a sheep. Therapy and labor

Most of 54 pregnant ewes with a permanent and total vaginal prolapse were pluriparous. Dystocia occurred in 35 cases. In two thirds of the affected sheep the cervix failed to dilate completely. Mortality rate of lambs was higher than normal. The most important therapeutic measure besides reposition of the organ is the mechanical fixation of the vaginal mucosa, either by inserting a special device ("Schafretter") into the vagina or by suturing the labia. Lambing of treated animals has to be supervised. In sheep with ring-womb and partial prolapse of fetal membranes, caesarean section is advisable.
