Examination of vaginal epithelium of the sheep and its use in pregnancy diagnosis

Vaginal smears were collected and vaginal biopsies performed on 53 Prealpes du Sud and 55 Ile-de-France ewes aged 2-8 yr; examinations were made at various stages of the oestrous cycle, and during pregnancy, anoestrous and lactation. The appearance of the vaginal epithelium during pregnancy was not markedly different from that during anoestrus, lactation or the progestational phase of the oestrous cycle. However, it is suggested that vaginal-smear and vaginal-biopsy tests could be used to detect the different phases of the oestrous cycle.
