Samples of epithelium were taken from the cranial end of the vagina from sows in 3 herds. Only with 3 or less epithelial cell layers (indicative of predominance of progesterone) and a regular proximal border were diagnosed pregnant. The percentage accuracy obtained varied from 74.7 in a herd of 87 Miniature Swine, in which reproductive efficiency was below a commercially acceptable average, to 89.3 in a commercial herd of 84 sows and 94.8 in the University of Missouri breeding herd of 77.
