The use of Giemsa stain in a mark-recapture method to study dispersal of adults of Aedes communis in Pennsylvania in 1983 is reported. Giemsa stain was applied to a pond containing 4th-instar larvae of the culicid so that the concentration was 2 p.p.m. Laboratory tests indicated that at this concentration 57% of treated A. communis 4th-instars would result in self-marked adults. Of 941 female adults captured, 7 were positive for Giemsa self-marker. Five of these were recovered only 0.4 km from the stained pool, indicating that A. communis has a limited dispersal range, but further study is necessary to confirm these results.
