In laboratory experiments, increasing salinity of the water (from 1000 to 6000 p.p.m. sodium chloride) in which larvae and pupae of A. abserratus, A. canadensis, A. cinereus, A. fitchii, A. provocans, A. punctor, A. sticticus and A. stimulans were reared resulted in decreased wing size in the adult females and decreasing egg production. Minor environmental contamination by salt, as used to melt snow on roads in North America, may place an ecological pressure against local populations of snow-melt Aedes.
