Epidemiology of measles in rural area of Punjab

A retrospective survey was conducted in all 16 villages of 4 sub-centres of Verka block, Dist. Amritser to know the incidence of measles which was calculated as 11.1 per 1000 population and 26.8 per 1000 children up to 14 years of age. Attack rate was highest (54.6/100) among children of 1.4 years of age; median age being 39 months. Maximum cases (78 per cent) were noted from May to July. Two female children from poor community died after a chronic illness giving a case fatality rate equivalent to 0.8 per cent. Out of a total of 241 cases, 101 (41.9 per cent) developed complications with highest incidence (61.5 per cent) was in 0- < 1 year age group. Multiple complications were observed in 49.5 per cent of complicated cases of measles. Most common complications were diarrhoea and upper respiratory tract infection.
