Previously the author reported the clinical effectiveness and safety of dual-mode independent lung ventilation, using a technique to ventilate independently the exposed lung by HFJV (high frequency jet ventilation) and the other lung by IPPV. The best conditions for HFJV which is carried out through a teflon tube inserted into the lumen of the exposed lung were studied on dog. Maximum elevation of PaO2 and reduction of PaCO2 were found, when the driving pressure of HFJV was 10 psi; frequency was 200 to 400 cycles/min; I/E ratio was 70%; length of teflon tube was 5 to 20 cm: and size of the tube was 15 to 17 gauge.
