Chronic ethanol consumption produces derangements in cell membrane structure which lead to modifications in all membrane-related processes. In particular an increase occurs in striatal adenylate cyclase (AC) basal activity, whereas dopamine (DA) only partially stimulates cyclic AMP production. On the other hand the effects of GTP and cholera toxin on adenylate cyclase activity are less remarkable in membranes from chronic ethanol treated rats. Results are discussed in terms of an ethanol-induced disorganization of the supramolecular entity linked to the regulation of cyclic AMP production.
