Phospholipid composition of Microsporum gypseum has been modulated following its growth at the suboptimal temperature (20.degree. C instead of 27.degree. C) either in the medium supplemented with ethanol or where glycerol was substituted as carbon source for glucose in Sabouraud's medium. Amongst major phospholipids, levels of both phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) were enhanced under all the cultural conditions studied. The ratio of unsaturated/saturated phospholipid fatty acids was augmented in all the cultures grown at the suboptimal temperature. Spheroplasts prepared from such cells exhibited varying capacity to accumulate amino acids; the maximum uptake being by spheroplasts obtained from cells group with glycerol as the main carbon source.
