Ostertagiasis in young lambs in spring

An outbreak of severe ostertagiasis in young lambs in East Anglia in May 1985 was attributed primarily to heavy stocking of lays with older animals for a month in the previous autumn, when unusually mild weather probably permitted abnormal larval development on the pasture. Other probable causes of heavy contamination included underestimation of the carrying capacity of the pasture and overgrazing. Treatment of the whole flock with oxfendazole or levamisole and removal of stock to a rested pasture was followed by eventual recovery.
