In autumn, experimental animals were drawn from three herds that had grazed pasture during the previous winter and spring. One herd of two-year-old steers had had ostertagiasis during that period. The other two herds, one of three-year-old heifers and one of ten-month-old weaners, were apparently healthy. Twenty animals from each were allocated at random to four groups: a control group, one treated with levamisole only, one treated with HCG only, and one treated with HCG followed 48 hours later by levamisole. The animals were slaughtered after 5 or 10 days and abomasal contents examined. Counts for all stages of the ostertagia life cycle were made. In the steers and heifers treatment had little effect. In the weaners levamisole removed 91% of adult O. ostertagi and the combined treatment 77%. The LH-like activity of HCG did not improve the action of levamisole against inhibited fourth-stage larvae.
