Causes of mortality among young Scottish Blackface lambs

During two consecutive lambing seasons, 282 young lambs which had died were collected from 10 hill farms. Stillbirth accounted for 22% of the deaths but no diagnosis was obtained for 60%. Since visible fat reserves were absent from 120 of the 169 'no diagnoses', it appears that starvation was the main cause of death.
