Several anthropophilic mosquito species which were breeding in temporary water bodies had their breeding sites permanently flooded by the activities of beavers (Castor canadensis) at Otsego Lake, New York State. Prior to flooding, Aedes punctor and A. stimulans accounted for the bulk of adult mosquitoes. After flooding by the beaver pond, although the species distribution remained the same, with A. stimulans, A. punctor, A. cinereus, A. triseriatus, A. hendersoni, A. vexans, A. riparius, Coquillettidia perturbans, Anopheles punctipennis and A. earlei being recorded, absolute numbers of mosquitoes had decreased. Aedes punctor and A. stimulans accounted for most of the fall in numbers.
