Two cases of acute pulmonary oedema associated with traditional fever (Malaria) therapy with herbal concoctions involving steam inhalation are described. Alveolar capillary membrane damage resulted in increased membrane permeability leading to transudation of fluids and proteins into the lung interestitium and alveolar spaces. The possible roles of steam inhalation and toxic vapours from the boiling concoction in alveolar capillary membrane damage are discussed.
