Acute pulmonary oedema as an adverse reaction to the use of xylazine in sheep

Of 50 Swedish Landrace or crossbred sheep sedated with 0.15-0.5 mg/kg xylazine at the clinic in Uppsala, eight developed pulmonary oedema. Recovery occurred after administration of atropine, though some sheep recovered spontaneously. A fatal case, however, occurred in a 2-year-old Swedish Landrace ram given 0.4 followed by 0.04 mg/kg. The authors suggest that, because methyl-paraben is commonly used as a preservative in drugs, and because xylazine also contains it, affected sheep may have been sensitized to this substance.
