A one year survey was conducted to determine the densities of V. parahaemolyticus in naturally occurring and market samples of fish and crustaceans. About one-third (32.1%) of the 828 samples examined harboured the halophile. Estuarine crustaceans were found to be the major reservoirs of V. parahaemolyticus with 49.7% of the samples harbouring this pathogen. Densities of V. parahaemolyticus per gram of sample were also highest in estuarine crustaceans. Market samples of fishes yielded a higher frequency of isolation as compared to freshly caught fishes. The incidence/densities of V. parahaemolyticus in estuarine fishes and crustaceans was much higher as compared to their marine counterparts. A clear preponderance of positive isolations and densities of this organism was discernible during the summer months.
