Studies on the loss of lactose in milk stored in healthy and subclinically affected udders using 14C-lactose

Labelled lactose was infused into the lactiferous sinus of one quarter in two healthy cows and three with subclinical mastitis. Radioactivity was measured in samples of urine, blood and milk taken at intervals for 5 hours after infusion. Loss of lactose from milk in the lactiferous sinus was 7.5-10% in the healthy udder and 32-45% in mastitis. The greater loss in mastitis was attributed to absorption followed by urinary excretion, rather than inhibition of lactose synthesis.
