A trial of lactose hydrolysed milk in Australian Aboriginal children

Mean daily wt. gains of 25 1-yr old Australian aboriginal infants fed reconstituted lactose-hydrolysed milk for 7-21 days, were 4.80 plus or minus 0.80 g/kg, compared with 2.20 plus or minus 0.75 g/kg for a similar group of 25 infants fed normal reconstituted whole milk from the same source. The difference in wt. gain was highly significant (P < 0.0125). The wt. gain was higher in the hydrolysed milk group, irrespective of the % of Standard Weight for Age or the presence or absence of recognizable symptoms of lactose intolerance.
