A review of some early studies on schistosomiasis in Zambia (since 1946) showed the prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium to be 14 to 40% and of S. mansoni 0 to 7% in the Northern and Luapula provinces. The areas around lakes Kariba in the south and Bangweulu in the north had prevalence rates of 3 to 35% for S. haematobium and 2 to 6% for S. mansoni. A nationwide survey between 1976 and 1982 showed the overall prevalence of S. haematobium to vary between about 14 to 20%. The highest prevalence (57.9%) occurred in the Gwembe valley in Southern Province. S. mansoni was not widespread but high rates of infection (45 to 77%) were found in Northern Province. The authors summarize information on the prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni in Zambia which has been presented in 8 earlier papers by various authors and add a brief summary of results of surveys carried out in the Copperbelt and Northern Provinces of Zambia since 1976.J.M.
