Ecotourism holds a great potential for the conservation of fragile forest ecology in the Himalayan State of Uttaranchal (India) and can provide a paradigm for development to the local communities. Informed involvement of stakeholders is necessary to ensure wide-base sustainable ecotourism. Stakeholder participation can substantially augment the infrastructure for ecotourism. A stakeholders' reference matrix was developed to provide list of the role that different stakeholders can assume and to identify the agencies that can provide assistance in acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge by the stakeholders. A suggestive list of the actions to be initiated to work towards achieving resource conservation with economic benefits for stakeholder through ecotourism in Uttaranchal is also provided.
