Distribution and identification of sugarcane mosaic and yellow leaf virus in Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Bihar states of India

During an extensive survey of sugarcane in Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Bihar, India, 32 cultivars were found to be infected with mild or severe mosaic symptoms, whereas 29 cultivars were found to be infected with mid-rib yellowing symptoms. From the diseased crops, sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) and sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) were identified based on the symptoms, particle morphology and serological analysis. Our study confirms the wide occurrence of SCMV and SCYLV in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Bihar.
