Electron microsopic studies of the effect of tolnaftate on Trichophyton schoenleinii

Comparative electron microscopic studies were made on normal T. schoenleinii and that from shake cultures to which tolnaftate in 95% ethanol-acetone had been added after growth for 4 days. With tolnaftate concns. of 0.62-2.5 mu g/ml for 24 h or longer the number of ribosomes decreased after 24 h and finally disappeared. The formation of vacuoles and the development of osmophilic electron-dense lipid bodies were observed. The endoplasmic reticulum, cytoplasmic membrane and mitochondria showed distortion or dissolution or became granular. Tolnaftate seemed to have no effect on the cell wall and outer coating of the pathogen.
