The distribution of Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale in school populations, Gojam and Gondar Administrative Regions

Examination of 1394 stool samples from 17 towns and villages in Gondar Administrative Region and 1823 samples from 14 towns and villages in Gojam Administrative Region, Ethiopia, revealed hookworm eggs in 22.7% and 18.1% respectively. When eggs were hatched in vitro, only N. americanus larvae were recovered from Gojam, but in Gondar, 92.5% of larvae were N. americanus and 7.5% A. duodenale. Rates of infection with N. americanus increased with altitude.
