Rats depleted of protein were given by stomach tube a casein hydrolysate to induce enzyme formation in the liver. Some of them were given azo compounds by intraperitoneal injection 3 h before the protein meal. The azo compounds, two carcinogenic and one an inactive isomer, completely prevented the response to protein of histidase (EC.4.3.1.3) and partly repressed that of serine dehydratase (EC.4.2.1.13).
