Methods of studying chemotaxis in nematodes (including the use of a video camera interfaced to a microcomputer) are reviewed and the chemical stimuli that have been identified are discussed. New data are presented indicating that Caenorhabditis elegans is attracted by low concentrations of NaCl but repelled by high concentrations; the transition was quite sharp, attraction rapidly turning to repulsion above 100 mM NaCl.
