Laboratory investigation of samples of perha and burfi, reported to have caused illness in consumers, revealed the presence of 2.7 .times. 105 and 3.8 .times. 106 Staphylococus aureus/g, respectively. Four isolates of S. aureus from both perha and burfi produced enterotoxin A. Both also contained thermonuclease, indicating multiplication of enterotoxin A-producing S. aureus. On the basis of the numbers of enterotoxigenic S. aureus isolated from these 2 foods, their multiplication and the history and symptoms of the illness, the outbreak was considered to be due to S. aureus.
