In anesthetized rats, cimetidine (CMT) 120 mg/kg i.v. significantly increased the doses of aconitine required to induce arrhythmia and death; the incidence of ventricular fibrillation and mortality due to i.v. CaCl2 144 mg/kg were decreased by CMT 60 and 120 mg/kg i.v. The arrhythmias induced by i.v. BaCl2 240 .mu.g/min and by coronary occlusions in rats were also counteracted by i.v. CMT 75 and 120 mg/kg, respectively. In anesthetized rabbits, i.v. CMT 37.5 mg/kg delayed the onset of ventricular ectopic beats and shortened the total duration of arrhythmia induced by i.v. adrenaline 75 .mu.g/kg. The doses of ouabain necessary to induce ventricular extrasystole and death were elevated by i.v. CMT 3.75 mg/kg per min in anesthetized guinea pigs. The effective refractory period (ERP) of isolated rabbit left atria was prolonged significantly by CMT 0.225 and 0.45 mg/ml without affecting myocardial contractility.
