In clinical practice anti-arrhythmic drugs are almost invariably prescribed in the setting of heart disease. Hence patients who are given these agents are usually on other drugs, most commonly for hypertension, heart failure or coronary disease. Furthermore, they may be on non-cardiovascular therapy for associated diseases as well. Hence a detailed knowledge of the interactions between anti-arrhythmic drugs themselves as well as between them and other drugs commonly used in cardiovascular therapeutics is essential if serious harm to the patient is to be avoided.
