In Texas, USA, 700 dogs were examined for circulating microfilariae using the modified Knott technique. Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae were present in 35 (5%) and Dipetalonema sp. microfilariae in 97 (14%). A 2-hour delay in fixing microfilariae did not appear to alter length or width measurements.
