At this meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 31 October to 8 November 1983, many aspects of lymphatic filariasis were discussed, particular emphasis being placed on the need to develop control methods that can be integrated with primary health care systems; recommendations to further this aim are made. The main topics discussed at the meeting and reviewed in this report include: the filarial parasites and their prevalence, distribution, and reservoir hosts; clinical manifestations of filariasis; pathology, immunopathogenesis, immunodiagnosis and protective immunity; studies on experimental transmission and in vitro maintenance of filarial parasites; chemotherapy; the determination and recognition of the mosquito species transmitting Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori, vector-parasite relationships and vector control; methods used to assess filariasis control programmes; primary health care systems and community participation in control; human behavioural and socioeconomic aspects; and training and manpower development.
