In Vanuatu, Wuchereria bancrofti filariasis, transmitted by Anopheles farauti, was highly endemic at the beginning of the century, with prevalences of microfilaraemia and elephantiasis of 60.9 and 21% respectively. Vector control, and mass detection and chemotherapy programmes have reduced the prevalence of the disease, and only 70 cases were recorded in 1986 on the islands of Malicollo, Santo and Pentecost. The need for continuation of control measures is stressed.
