Diethylcarbamazine at 5 mg/kg body-weight was given daily for 6 days to 7,930 inhabitants of 6 villages in the Gumbasa irrigation area of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Brugia malayi microfilaria rates, as determined by examination of thick smears of finger-prick blood, fell from 22% before treatment to 5% 3 months after treatment. Fever, with or without vomiting, occurred in 35% of those treated, but was alleviated by antipyretics and antihistamines.
