Intestinal parasites and malaria in the Poso Valley, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia

Of 334 males and 337 females aged from one to 88 years from 5 villages in the Poso Valley, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, examined by faecal sample in June and August 1972, 59% were infected with Ascaris lumbricoides, 32% Trichuris trichiura, 66% hookworm, 1% Enterobius vermicularis and 1% Strongyloides stercoralis. A. lumbricoides was detected in 65% of females and 55% of males. In general there was no difference in infection rates of the other helminths between the sexes. Higher rates of infection with A. lumbricoides were found in those under 30 years old. Hookworm infections were lowest in those less than 10 years old. Schistosoma japonicum was not found.
