In Sri Lanka, a mass treatment programme against Wuchereria bancrofti filariasis in the Walgama area (population 10,940) is described. Over a 5-day period, persons over 12 years old were given 300 mg of diethylcarbamazine per day, those 8-12 years old 150 mg per day and those 5-7 years old 100 mg per day. Some side effects were observed, but these were relatively rare. The incidence of microfilaraemia was reduced from 3.9 to 1.52%, having previously been reduced from 6.01% by environmental measures before the treatment programme began.
