Tests were applied to 505 blood samples collected from three groups of boars on one farm. Age groups and live weights were between 105 and 110 days and between 40 kg and 45 kg or between 180 and 220 days and from 90 kg to 105 kg, while the third group consisted of somewhat older animals. Blood sampling proper, with animals being fixed by means of a snout loop, was followed by considerable rise in plasma-borne lactate and glucose concentrations, depending on physical fitness of the animals concerned. An assessment was made of haematopoiesis, with particular reference being made to haemoglobin concentration in blood, haematocrit, and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration of erythrocytes. An account is given of correlations between lactate concentrations, on the one hand, and haematological values, on the other. Normal haematological values were associated with the lowest rises in lactate concentration. Such rises increased with growing deviation of haematological parameters from normal. Exchange processes between blood plasma and erythrocytes were susceptible to influence which resulted from growth in lactate concentration and alteration in plasma glucose concentration.
