Complete transverse dissection of the gastrocnemius muscle in Testudo horsfieldi causes degenerative processes in the damaged muscle fibrils, which are most pronounced in the distal muscle stump. At the same time the muscle shows regeneration processes. The defect area is filled with connective tissue that is ingrown in myogenic elements from both parts of the damaged muscle. Light microscopy and EM revealed satellite cells, myoblasts, myosymplasts and muscular tubules. Muscle buds were found to be formed at the ends of some damagd myofibrils. The entire process proceeds more slowly in the distal stump. The defect is filled with differentiated myofibrils .apprx. 3 mo. after the trauma. The onset of the innervation recovery at the site of the defect is recorded 1 mo. after the operation, whereas re-innervation of the entire muscle is completed 6 mo. after the operation. As regards the rate of the recovery and mode of regeneration, reptiles rank intermediate between amphibians and mammals.
