Effects of Quadrex on growth, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value in piglets

Growth and mortality until weaning were compared in two groups of newborn piglets. The first group (171 animals) was given Quadrex (a soluble powder consisting of ferric ammonium citrate, copper sulphate, various vitamins, neomycin and glucose) in the drinking water for 20 days, and the second (154 animals) was injected i/m with 100 mg iron dextran. Haemoglobin and haematocrit values in each group were compared at 15 and 28 days. Mortality was roughly the same in each group. Weight gain was significantly higher in the Quadrex group and haemoglobin and haematocrit values, though roughly equivalent at 15 days, were also significantly higher at 28 days.
