Blood urea concentration and hematocrit in calf diarrhea--diagnostic and prognostic value

A significant relationship was shown between urea and haematocrit values in 92 calves (under 14 days) with diarrhoea, i.e. mean urea values rose or fell by 1.89 mg/dl with changes of one volume in haematocrit values. In 26% of calves both values were normal; 20% had high urea values, and 12% high haematocrit values; in 41% both values were above normal. Treatment was less successful when haematocrit was over 50% and urea over 80 mg/dl. Prognosis became more difficult with increasing values. However, treatment should almost always be attempted.
