Occurrence of rota- and coronavirus as a cause of neonatal calf diarrhea in the Federal Republic of Germany

The occurrence of both rotavirus and coronavirus infections in calves of two herds in the Munich area in 1977 was demonstrated by direct virological examination of faeces. These viruses, which have already been reported in the literature as causes of diarrhoea in calves in the USA, Belgium, Canada, England and New Zealand, have thus been shown to be active in the Federal Republic of Germany. The courses of both viral infections followed the pattern described in previous reports in the literature. Rotavirus infection was fatal in one of 14 cases; coronavirus infection caused sickness in 10 cases and death in 4 cases at the farm; 3 of the 10 sick animals were treated at the clinic where 2 died and one recovered after 14 days.
