Cyathostominae and other strongyles of horses in the Federal Republic of Germany

A total of 3133 strongyles, comprising 18 species in 5 genera, were collected from the faeces of 34 horses used in a trial of mebendazole in the GFR. Cylicocyclus nassatus comprised 48.1% of the worms and occurred in all 34 animals; C. radiatus (14.2%, 30), Cyathostomum pateratum (8.4%, 26), Cylicocyclus leptostomus (7.7%, 28), Cyathostomum catinatum (4.8%, 22), Cylicostephanus longibursatus (4.3%, 20) and Cyathostomum labiatum (3.3%, 23) were the next most common. Immature worms comprised only 1.5% of the total. 1701 of the many worms passed by 10 ponies treated with ivermectin were also identified. C. catinatum and Cylicostephanus longibursatus (both in 10), Cylicocyclus nassatus (7), C. radiatus (6) and Cyathostomum coronatum (6) predominated.
